Optimising Quality of Life

Stroke, surgery, or major medical conditions may impact an individual’s ability to independently perform basic tasks like standing, walking, showering, and doing housework.

Physical therapy improves mobility and encourages activities and lifestyle changes that can enhance overall health and well-being.

The DRC provides a continuum of care for adults and seniors to help them regain, maintain, and optimise their ability to perform basic tasks such as dressing and eating.

What We Do

Our team of occupational therapists and physiotherapists at the DRC can help seniors gain better core muscle strength and balance through therapy.

This also reduces the risk of falling, which in turn leads to fewer hospital admissions and better quality of life.

Our physiotherapist will:

  • Assess the individual’s strength, range of movement, body posture, balance, and flexibility
  • Customise training exercises to improve strength, gait, balance, and coordination, which help to minimise fall risk
  • Prescribe walking aids such as walking frames, quad sticks, and rollators to facilitate independent living
  • Train caregivers to support the individual in performing the exercises

Our occupational therapist will:

  • Identify challenges with daily activities due to pain, joint stiffness, fatigue, stress and/or other medical conditions
  • Assess obstacles in the individual’s home and community that hinder their active participation in meaningful activities
  • Prescribe adaptive equipment and mobility devices like commodes, mobility scooters, and wheelchairs
  • Train the individual and their caregivers on the appropriate use of the prescribed aids
  • Customise intervention to overcome physical barriers in the home environment
  • Improve cognition and ensure they can safely and independently perform daily activities such as eating and getting dressed

What You Can Expect

We will:

  • Contact you or your loved ones to confirm your details
  • Set a date for your first visit
  • Inform you of the cost of treatment

Subsidies may be available. Means testing will determine your eligibility and the level of subsidy. The means test is based on household income per capita or the annual value of your residence.

Tele-rehabilitation may be offered together with limited in-person slots if recommended by our therapists.

During your first visit

After a comprehensive assessment, your therapist will discuss the findings with you. Based on your goals and priorities, we’ll customise an intervention programme.

This may include assisting you in transitioning from a walking frame to a walking stick, using assistive devices for daily tasks, improving steady walking over longer distances, navigating overhead bridges comfortably, and safely managing roadside curbs.

During subsequent sessions

Your therapist will re-assess and evaluate your progress and continue to work with you to achieve your goals
