During the coronavirus pandemic and circuit breaker, it was the strong support of various community partners, including Pathlight School in Ang Mo Kio, that helped keep our seniors going. While the Covid-19 distancing measures prevented face to face interaction, the students were still able to reach out and support them. They printed and bound 30 colouring booklets on “Makan Time” and “My Home, My Kampong”. They also put together a gardening kit to help seniors hone their gardening skills and connect with neighbours.

Said Ms Joey Lim, Track Head, Vocational Track, Pathlight School, “Our Vocational Track students have always enjoyed contributing to these meaningful collaborations with TOUCH. This project in particular was especially meaningful for our students as it gave them an opportunity to use their skills and talents to contribute to community, and show care and concern during this challenging period.”

As the students could not visit seniors or TOUCHpoint@AMK 433, they left a personal note with each kit to encourage the seniors and let them know where they can find help.  “I am happy to be able to contribute to this project and make recyclable planters for the elderly. I hope the elderly will enjoy creating their own flower gardens with the planting kits and be meaningfully engaged at home,” said student Han Pin Yun, Vocational Track, Year 7.

Mdm Yeo Kim Hiang, 85, was happy to receive the gardening kit recently as she has always loved gardening. “Whenever I see plants or flowers, I will smile, especially orchids. Somehow, it lightens my mood. Gardening is so fulfilling!”

A special thanks to our student volunteers who devoted their time and talent to reach out to the elderly residents in Ang Mo Kio.
